I would like to write something, to help persuade people that this action really is worth carrying on with. Lamamo told me that people are getting tired, discouraged and it might be useful to talk about what motivates us to take part in this action. So here’s my view. On your own for hours doing nothing but carrying the placard, standing next to the banners denouncing the complicity of WHO in the continuing crime of Chernobyl is an achievement. I feel I’m in the right place, and have no doubts about the legitimacy of this action, nor about its effectiveness. I know that we scarcely register against the powerful coalition that keeps its silence and Mayntains the cover up; I know that we will probably achieve nothing in the immediate future, nothing concrete nothing that materially changes the facts of the situation. But I feel that our presence here is indispensable on another level: a voice from our human conscience, a voice protesting, asserting that life and truth have an inalienable value. I feel I am representing the soul of humanity, rejecting the state to which man appears to have been reduced. I feel that I am – that we are – like a clarion call, an echo-chamber. And our effectiveness is real but not concrete, measurable and above all not immediate … It is a long process, a hope that might know all the reasons for giving up but refuses to give in to them.

So what is this effectiveness that I feel, of which I am convinced and which does not belong (in the short term at least) in the realm of hard facts? It exists on an ethical level. It appeals to something in humanity which goes beyond the individual. It concerns the consciousness of the species, it aims at transforming a collective unconscious, at spreading a vibration – like a drop of water falling into a pond, creating concentric ripples into infinity.

On a slightly humorous note: amid the stream of luxury cars passing in front of WHO, I saw an extra-terrestrial: a small green 2CV! … Definitely a Martian!
